The inaugural exhibition at CAN Foundation’s new space, MO BY CAN, 《Between the Lines》, explores through painting, video, installation, and sound the new possibilities that emerge when physical or emotional boundaries are unsettled by change and rendered ambiguous.

Just as calm water reaches its boiling point and turns into vapor, unstable and uncomfortable states can provoke a stronger desire for new possibilities than familiar and stable conditions. One point should be made clear: the “newness” discussed in this exhibition does not refer to novelty of shape or appearance, nor simply to difference from what already exists.

The newness produced by drawing and blurring boundaries is closer to a desire for flexibility and possibility—one that encompasses openness and consideration toward unfamiliar things.

Leaving behind sixteen years in the familiar and comfortable neighborhood of Seongbuk-dong, the time that will unfold at MO BY CAN in Hannam-dong is expected to be shaped by change and by the experiments, attempts, transformations, and challenges of the many artists and curators who will encounter the space in the future.

Accordingly, 《Between the Lines》 brings together works by three artists with entirely different practices: Daum Kim, Ahn Solji, and Lee Heejun. Prepared while imagining a space that had not yet been completed, the exhibition represented a challenge for both the artists and the curator.

Conceived by imagining a new landscape within a new space, the exhibition hopes to offer visitors to MO BY CAN a glimpse of the countless possibilities generated by change and balance—or perhaps imbalance—beyond what is merely familiar or comfortable.
