The Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture (CEO Lee Chang-ki) will hold the “1st Seoul Arts Awards” at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, at QUAD, the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s Daehakro Theater. The awards recognize outstanding works of art that have contributed to the development of the arts through high-quality artistic creation and expanded opportunities for Seoul citizens to enjoy culture.

Held for the first time this year, the “Seoul Arts Awards” is an awards program in the field of fine arts that selects outstanding works from among projects chosen through the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s arts support programs in five categories: theater, music, dance, traditional arts, and visual arts.

While arts support has previously focused primarily on supporting artistic activities and the creative process, the awards aim to establish a virtuous cycle of arts support by connecting the outcomes of artistic works with feedback, identifying and honoring outstanding works, enhancing the brand value of award-winning works, and creating opportunities for their repertoires to reach audiences both in Korea and abroad.

To this end, the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture formed a 34-member selection committee across the respective fields in June last year and conducted a comprehensive review of 242 works registered as candidates for the “Seoul Arts Awards” out of a total of 518 projects selected for its arts support programs last year. Over the course of six months, all candidate works were monitored on site, and a rigorous selection process—including document reviews and deliberative discussions—was implemented to ensure fairness in the selection of works.

A prize of KRW 20 million will be awarded to one Grand Prize-winning work, KRW 10 million each to five Best Award-winning works in the respective genres, and KRW 5 million each to five Excellence Award-winning works. The prizes are intended to encourage the award-winning works to be further refined and developed into distinctive repertoires so that they can reach broader audiences both in Korea and abroad. One of the five Best Award-winning works will be selected for the Grand Prize, which will be announced for the first time at the awards ceremony on Tuesday, February 28.

The Best Awards will be presented to ▲ Maeng (Theater, Cornerstone), ▲ Yul.Dong.Seon (Music, Music Today), ▲ Hello, My Geurume (Dance, Bo Kyung Jung Dance Production), ▲ Akgaakmu – Jeoljeong 絶靜 (Traditional Arts, Heo Yoon-jeong), and ▲ Right-Angled Mind (Visual Arts, Lee Eun-woo). The Excellence Awards will be presented to ▲ Jeong Hee-jeong (Theater, Rabbit Hole Theater), ▲ 2022 Sound on the Edge III – Updated and 2022 Sound on the Edge V – Re-Creation (Music, TIMF Ensemble), ▲ Edge of Angle (Dance, Jung Hyung-il Ballet Creative), ▲ 流 – Child of the Abyss (Traditional Arts, Kim Yong-sung), and ▲ Kai·Ju·People (Visual Arts, Don Sunpil).

Meanwhile, soprano Park Ha-na will give a celebratory performance at the awards ceremony. Park is a vocalist who gained recognition for her talent after winning the Great Lakes Region of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in New York.

She has also received honors including the Rookie of the Year Award at the 2019 Korea Opera Awards and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s “Today’s Young Artist Award” in 2021. The event will be broadcast live simultaneously on the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s YouTube channel, SPAC TV (@sfacmovie), and Hankyung arteTV (@Hankyung_arteTV).

Lee Chang-ki, CEO of the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, said, “We hope the Seoul Arts Awards will play a role in creating a virtuous cycle by enhancing the brand value of artists and their works, disseminating high-quality artistic outcomes, and expanding opportunities for citizens to experience outstanding works.” He added, “We hope it will become an occasion that supports artists in their activities and offers a sense of direction for the arts community.”
