Photographer CHE Onejoon (34) has become the first Korean artist to be selected as a recipient of the Musée du quai Branly’s photography support program in France in 2013. The award carries a prize of €15,000.

Located near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Musée du quai Branly holds approximately 3,500 works of world cultural heritage on display and a collection of some 300,000 non-European artworks from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and other regions. The museum is also renowned for its distinctive building designed by celebrated French architect Jean Nouvel.

The artist stated, “The work to be presented at the Musée du quai Branly in 2013 will introduce Black Monument, a documentary project examining monuments and buildings dedicated to African dictators that were constructed by North Korea.”

CHE is currently an artist-in-residence at the Cité internationale des arts through the Samsung Foundation of Culture (2011–2012), while also participating in Le Pavillon, the artist residency program of Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

A self-taught photographer, CHE is known as an emerging documentary photographer in Korea for his work documenting transformations in military facilities.
