The Ilwoo Foundation has announced the selection of three artists as “Artists of the Year to Watch” for the 2nd Ilwoo Photography Award.

Koo Sungsoo (41), selected in the Publishing Category of “Artist of the Year to Watch,” is a talented artist who has developed an original method of combining sculpture, painting, and photography, manually recreating the mechanical production process inherent to the medium of photography.

He received consistently high praise from all of the judges for his exceptional ability to express diverse and experimental subject matter according to his own intentions, as well as for demonstrating a distinctive aesthetic sensibility characteristic of contemporary Korea.

Taewon Jang (35), selected in the Fine Art section of the Exhibition Category, uses a large-format camera and long nighttime exposures to create artificial landscapes in which man-made structures merge with nature, producing uncanny colors and a sense of grandeur. Through these works, he expresses the idea that “the contemporary landscape is a scene in which the man-made and the natural converge.”

Through his self-portrait series, Jang has also demonstrated a distinctive individuality and perspective alongside a diverse range of expressive approaches, leading the judges to identify him as the artist with the greatest potential for future growth.

CHE Onejoon (31), selected in the Documentary section of the Exhibition Category, began his project with the chance discovery of an unidentified underground space and traced how the character and function of a particular place change according to different historical periods and social environments. His approach, concept, and technical execution were all highly regarded, generating considerable anticipation for the continuation of the project.

Beginning this year, the Ilwoo Photography Award has divided its selection into Publishing and Exhibition categories. The recipient in the Publishing Category is given the opportunity to publish a photobook with Hatje Cantz, a leading international art-book publisher based in Germany, thereby supporting Korean artists in entering the international art world.

The jury for the Exhibition Category consisted of Didier Ottinger, Deputy Director of the Centre Pompidou in France; Bill Douthitt, Special Editions Editor at National Geographic; Shin Soo-jin, professor and photography psychologist; Kang Seung-wan, Head of the Seoul Branch at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; and photography critic Kim Seung-gon.

Markus Hartmann, editor at the renowned German art-book publisher Hatje Cantz, also participated in judging the newly established Publishing Category.

Commenting on the judging process, Didier Ottinger said, “It was fascinating to encounter so many talented Korean artists capable of developing distinctive subject matter through creative ideas.”

Artists Back Seung Woo and Kim Insook were selected as recipients of the inaugural award last year, and Kim Insook’s solo exhibition is currently being held at Ilwoo Space on the first floor of the Korean Air Building from November 18 through January 9 of the following year.
