SPACE22 will present Dongsin Seo’s solo exhibition 《Figure Out》 from September 6 to September 27.

Seo has focused on revealing the fragile boundary between representation and abstraction. Through the 'Equation' series, in which the indexicality inherent to photography is disrupted through the interaction of multiple images within a single frame, he was selected as the Final Artist of the Year for the 13th KT&G SKOPF (Korean Photographer’s Fellowship) in 2022.

In 《Figure Out》, Seo presents a body of works including Dust Off, After Meal, and Flush Down, beginning with concrete images of basic everyday actions and seeking to naturally discover abstract forms within them. In other words, he records either actions performed for their own sake or the outcomes that arise naturally from those actions.

The artist’s intention to reveal the depth of everyday life becomes encoded, like an unreadable script, at the moment it encounters a desire to explore and articulate unconscious habits. The process of deciphering this code is surprisingly simple. Most people have experienced moments when repetition allows an action to escape its original meaning.

For instance, when the same word is repeated over and over, its meaning gradually fades and it begins to sound like an unfamiliar sequence of syllables. Likewise, through trivial and repetitive actions—such as shaking dust from fabric, observing the traces left on dishes after a meal, or flushing a toilet—the artist discovers and records aesthetic moments that move beyond context and purpose.

Visual contemplation, too, yields to repetition and is released from the obligation to assign meaning, shifting instead toward a state of sensory experience.
