GuNa’s solo exhibition 《askew bone and stuttering》, held at E’JUHEON, O’NEWWALL’s hanok project space, consists of paintings and installation works.

Most of the artist’s paintings begin with images captured through photography. She captures overflowing emotions from images in which examples such as private history and fate overlap with present appearances. The melancholic and ambiguous subjects that the artist discovers within these images are placed upon the canvas.

Her installation works take as their subjects things that would disappear if not held onto in the present: what has been left behind, what has fallen, and what cannot return. In the artist’s works, the forms of these subjects sometimes retain their past appearance intact, while at other times only traces remain.

More often than we might think, we experience moments in which it is difficult to communicate to others through language the things we understand with our minds and hearts. Perhaps it is impossible from the outset to express in language objects and ideas that exist only faintly on the far side of consciousness.

Yet GuNa attempts to translate and interpret these things by slowly unraveling the words emptied because they cannot contain such content, as well as the moments surrounding them. Within what the artist calls a “gap in understanding”—a “site of failure” to which clarity cannot be assigned—she takes not the position of a contemplative observer, but one of active engagement and participation.

Her attempts may occasionally strike precisely at the heart of something, yet even such moments contain the anxiety that they may slip away at any time. Nevertheless, the artist continues her attempts at the points where moments of success and failure intersect.
