Let us imagine a bright day in early fall after rainy season passed. If you look down Seoul from 63 Building, you may be excited with the scenery. However, Michel de Sereutu, a French philosopher said in his book The Everyday of Life that you can feel a sense of alienation from a city. The visual point that views a city can define a way that man interacts with city.

A great number of artists have dealt with the theme of city. Most work dealing with the theme of city was continuous variation on ways that man interacts with city. 12 Famous Places of Doksan is another name of relationship between man and city that Lee Byung-su defines. Lee pierced into the reality of city's everyday life to grasp the actual circumstance of city life instead of overlooking in the distance.

Lee's work is characterized by transferring everyday places to artistic landscape through his viewpoint. Lee sketched bare landscape of Doksan dong as it is. Landscape in pictures that looks somewhat distorted creates a context that is different from actual reality by adding some fiction along with title such as Maryong-Dae or Fantastic Cliff.

12 Famous Places of Doksan started as a part of public art projects. However, Lee's work is somewhat far from the concept of public art people have. People often think that public art may be closely related to city beautification. For Lee who resides in Geumcheon art factory and creates his work, Doksan-dong is at once living space and working space.

Lee contains Doksan-dong and Doksan-dong's life in his photo and reproduces it as a story and guide for the public. Lee walks around Doksan-dong and records the life and story of Doksan-dong as it is.

The story contained in photos of 12 Famous Places of Doksan is expanded between the boundary between record as fact and fiction. The reason that 12 Famous Places of Doksan becomes something special beyond a report or data collection on a suburban area of Seoul is the delicate conflict between fact and fiction.

The power that make us watch everyday of gray city with curiosity is created by the process of conflict between fact and fiction. The surplus of meaning that is created at the spot of the conflict makes us consider 12 Famous Places of Doksan in the category of work not in the category of collection of data.

We are living moving toward somewhere or making something. Modern people are accustomed to alienated life and the condition of anonymity. However, we seek and find truth in time and space of everyday life.

If we can find the meaning of life, space and time in everyday life, isn't it meaningful to us ? Though the reality is everyday life at gray city instead of fascinating pink fantasy, actual landscape can become true landscape that can rescue us.
