Jeju-born Danish artist Jane Jin Kaisen (38) will represent Korea at the Venice Biennale.

The Arts Council Korea announced on the 22nd that it had selected curator Hyunjin Kim as the artistic director of the Korean Pavilion at the 58th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, to be held next year. Kim was selected by the jury for her proposed exhibition theme, “Performative Female Narratives that Deviate from and Reconstruct the Modern and Contemporary History of East Asia”.

Kim selected three women artists for the exhibition: siren eun young jung, Hwayeon Nam, and Jane Jin Kaisen.

The selection committee praised Kim’s proposal, stating that she “sought to construct an exhibition that weaves discourses of otherness, viewed through diverse and distinctive perspectives, through a gendered lens.”

In particular, the committee acknowledged the capabilities of the participating artists, including Jane Jin Kaisen, and the curator, stating, “The theme is grounded in the particularities of Korea and East Asia while also capable of conveying universality, and the artists selected possess the ability to address it.

By adopting a structure in which the three artists and the curator add to one another’s narratives and develop and expand the discourse, the proposal leaves room to compensate for potential weaknesses in its composition while demonstrating the strength of a subtle dynamism of multiplicity and connection.”

The selection committee for the artistic director of the Korean Pavilion consisted of Kim Sun-hee, Director of the Busan Museum of Art (committee chair); Heejin Kim, Director of the Branch Museum Development Project at the Seoul Museum of Art; curator Soyeon Ahn; Lee Joon, Deputy Director of Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art; Seonryeong Cho, Professor at Pusan National University; and Kyunghak Yang, Acting Secretary General of the Arts Council Korea.

Born in Jeju in 1980 and adopted to Denmark, Jane Jin Kaisen first visited her birthplace in 2001. Her invited solo exhibition at Artspace C in 2013 provided an important opportunity to introduce her work more widely in Jeju and Korea.

She has since maintained an active practice, receiving the ENTERPRIZE International Jury Award in Denmark in 2011, participating in a special exhibition at the Jeju 4·3 Peace Memorial Hall in 2013, being selected for Leeum’s ArtSpectrum in 2016, and being selected for a solo exhibition at Art Sonje Center in 2018.
