The many imperfect “selves” met through 《2021–2022 Collaborative Creation Workshop: Earth and Art_handshaking》 and spent time imagining what we could do as we are now, rather than postponing action by using our imperfections as an excuse. Fourteen artists formed three teams, working together sometimes in smaller units and sometimes as a larger group.

Although each of them still stands at a crossroads in search of their own answers and meanings, the process of 《2021–2022 Collaborative Creation Workshop: Earth and Art_handshaking》 contains their multilayered thoughts and feelings, both as individuals and as artists, concerning the questions they explored together: “Earth and Art” and the possibility of “forming new relationships” between them.

In imagining new ways of relating, we considered the act of joining hands and exchanging greetings. A “handshake” is a greeting that conveys goodwill toward one another, an attitude of recognizing each other as equals, and an agreement on how a relationship is to be formed.

Reflecting these meanings of the handshake, 《2021–2022 Collaborative Creation Workshop: Earth and Art_handshaking》 brings together the artists’ attempts to become acquainted with one another in ways mutually acceptable within non-hierarchical relationships, as well as practices and questions that seek to redraw the countless networks of relations between human beings and the far more numerous nonhuman beings by understanding ourselves as part of the Earth.
