“How are you today?”

Every day, we encounter someone and ask after their health and state of mind. This is a greeting exchanged upon meeting, but it is also a phrase that carries a sincere wish for someone to be safe and at ease. In contemporary society, where phrases like “life is something to endure” have spread like a trend, asking after someone’s well-being is a hopeful question, wishing that they are alive and well today and will be at ease tomorrow.

This exhibition seeks to contain the lives and concerns of people today, and addresses them through three themes. The first theme, “Lonely Crowd,” seeks to show forms of community and various aspects of society in which people live together through specific or unspecified relationships.

The second theme, “The Self Within Me,” introduces works that listen to the voice of the self. The final theme, “Virtual World,” seeks to breathe new imagination into repetitive everyday life through works that present worlds not objectively visible.

The format connecting these themes borrows the method of couplets in calligraphy. A “couplet” refers to two or more phrases paired because they share similar tone or force.

Adopting this method, the exhibition pairs representative works from the Ulsan Art Museum collection with works by contemporary artists that share similar forms and contents. It is expected to serve as a guide for comparing and appreciating work with work, and work with the viewer’s own life.
