From September 18 to November 8, 2020, artist Gosari’s solo exhibition 《Woosil》 will be held in the special exhibition hall of the Salt Museum.

Gosari was the first resident artist of the 2020 “Art Like Salt” residency, and after experiencing twelve weeks of life on Jeungdo, she presents the work Woosil to viewers based on what she explored and researched there.

Woosil is an old word for a village fence: a stone wall approximately 30 to 200 meters long that blocks winds blowing in from the sea while allowing people to move freely in and out. It also carries a folk-religious meaning, protecting the village by blocking bad energy from entering and preventing the village’s energy from escaping, while connecting humans and nature.

During her stay on Jeungdo, Gosari visited and directly observed woosil structures remaining on various islands in Shinan, and created a woosil made of air pockets in the Salt Museum’s special exhibition hall.

As viewers walk through Gosari’s Woosil, which resembles the woosil structures that nameless villagers of long ago built stone by stone while praying for the peace of their village, they too may take a moment to wish for someone or something’s well-being.
