Installation view of 《The Black Stone and the Iron》 (TINC, 2023) © Woongcheol Lee

Woongcheol Lee’s solo exhibition 《The Black Stone and the Iron》 at TINC(This Is Not A Church) is based on the narrative of a laborer dispatched to the Middle East in the past.

The works, reconstructed from memories of objects brought back to Korea at the time, appear in the former church exhibition space as a way of connecting past and present.

The Perspective of Others

His work can be understood as questioning the invisible systems themselves that define modes of behavior or limit frames of perception within the environments and conditions surrounding us. He carefully examines the various tools and devices that have deeply penetrated life, willingly accepts them, and at the same time varies and applies them in order to shake fixed systems of perception and expand horizons.

His work can be said to design spaces and gaps for this purpose, adding “why” to the ways of life we take for granted.
