Chogye Art Museum (Director Choi Ki-won) announced that it has selected artist Boo Jihyun as the recipient of the 6th Jeju Chogye Art Award, presented in celebration of the museum’s sixth anniversary.

Named after the art name “Chogye” of veteran sculptor Choi Ki-won, Chogye Art Museum has selected a recipient of the Jeju Chogye Art Award every year since its opening in order to discover emerging artists from Jeju and encourage their creative practice.

This year, following an open call held throughout December of the previous year, Boo Jihyun was selected from among Korean painting, Western painting, and sculpture artists under the age of 39 who were born in Jeju, are currently active on the island, and have experience participating in solo and group exhibitions.

Boo graduated from the Department of Fine Art at Jeju National University, where she majored in Western Painting, in 2002, and from the Department of Media Print at the Graduate School of Design & Art, Sungshin Women’s University, in 2005. She has held solo exhibitions including 《Fishing Lamps, Discovered/Reinterpreted Objects》 (2012, Seoul), 《New Discourse》, 《Boo Ji Hyun》 (2013, Seoul and Jeju), and 《Net-being》 (2015, Jeju).

She has also steadily expanded her artistic practice through participation in group exhibitions and projects including 《The 3rd Kuandu Biennale》 in Taiwan, 《Hommage à Whanki》 in Seoul, 《Busan International Gallery Art Fair Special Exhibition》 in Busan, and 《Local Network Exchange Exhibition》 in Jeju.

She has received numerous awards and distinctions, including those from the National Annual Contemporary Competition of Prints (2002), the International Biennial Print and Drawing Exhibition (2003), the International Print Triennial Krakow (2006), and the Art Bank (2009).

Boo will receive KRW 10 million in prize money and KRW 1.5 million in support for catalogue production, as well as the opportunity to hold an exhibition at Chogye Art Museum free of charge. The prize money was funded with support from Jeju Loveland Museum, Jenong Agricultural Corporation Co., Ltd., Yonsei U Elle Clinic, Pearly Hotel, Gwangwon, Seonsa Beauty Center, and Baengnok Ready-Mixed Concrete Co., Ltd.

The award ceremony and exhibition opening will be held at Chogye Art Museum at 5 p.m. on June 6.
