Jeju-based artist Boo Jihyun, known for her striking installation works using discarded fishing lamps, has drawn attention for participating in an international project connecting the environment and art.

Boo took part in 《Artist’s Environmental Gaze: A Ten-Day Documentation》, held from the 28th to the 30th at Space Gallery in Indonesia and organized by the Korean Cultural Center Indonesia.

Instead of the fishing lamps that have long accompanied her practice, Boo presented an installation using plastic bottles and disposable cups collected locally in Jakarta, together with lighting, to explore ideas concerning nature and pollution.

Prior to the three-day exhibition, she undertook an exploratory process combining the perspectives of local residents with her own artistic viewpoint. The project drew attention for producing creative works grounded in the specific conditions of the site while moving beyond temporal and spatial limitations.

Indonesian artist Aliansyah Caniago, who participated in the project alongside Boo, created perfume using scents extracted from the polluted waters of Sunda Kelapa and also presented an installation incorporating recycled boxes.

Curator Kim Byeongeon, who organized the project, said, “Boo Jihyun is a young artist with an exceptional ability to work with recycled materials and lighting, which made her particularly well suited to this project,” adding, “It is a meaningful experiment in which works are created on site through an investigative process of research and fieldwork, allowing the working process itself to become a form of documentation.”
