The Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, directed by Choi Eun-ju, presents the Saengsaeng Hwahwa 2017 exhibition 《Inside Out》 in its Special Exhibition Gallery beginning December 15. ‘Saengsaeng Hwahwa’ is an annual exhibition organized by the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art in collaboration with the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation, presenting new works by visual artists selected through the Foundation’s Professional Arts Creation Support Program.

This year marks its fifth edition. Each year, the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation selects visual artists based in Gyeonggi Province and supports them in producing new work over the course of a year. In 2017, ten emerging artists aged forty or younger and ten established artists were selected, and approximately seventy new works by the established artists are presented at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art under the title 《Inside Out》.

Although the participating artists were not selected according to a particular theme or tendency, they share an approach of deeply contemplating and internalizing the many facets of life—including life and death, urban landscapes and everyday life, and the histories and memories of individuals and communities—and translating them into the subjects or modes of expression in their work.

The title 《Inside Out》 emerged from another commonality among them: in order to understand surfaces prompted by visible phenomena, they delve deeply into what lies behind them—the aspects that remain concealed or invisible—and, through this investigation, interpret and reveal those phenomena.
