Christine Sun Kim, a 36-year-old artist who overcame hearing impairment, has been named a joint recipient of the SeMA-Hana Media Art Award, hereafter referred to as the SeMA Art Award. Thai artist Korakrit Arunanondchai, 30, was also selected for the honor.

Born deaf in 1980, Christine Sun Kim is a Korean American artist based in Berlin, Germany. Incorporating her disability into her work, she has consistently explored themes of sound and silence.

Kim received the award for her installation Game of Skill 2.0, presented at the media art biennale 《Mediacity Seoul 2016》, which opens on September 1. The work is installed in the third-floor corridor of the Seosomun Main Building of the Seoul Museum of Art.

At the announcement of the SeMA Art Award recipients, held on August 31 at SeMA Hall in the basement of the Seoul Museum of Art, Kim delivered her acceptance remarks in American Sign Language, which interpreter Kim So-mang translated into Korean. “I did not expect to receive such a major award,” Kim said. “I am grateful that my artistic practice has been recognized.”

Established in 2015 to promote balanced development within the art world and broaden understanding of media art, the SeMA Art Award is now in its second year.

This year’s jury consisted of five members: Kim Hong-hee, director of the Seoul Museum of Art; Bartomeu Marí Ribas, director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; Eungie Joo, artistic director of the Anyang Public Art Project; Hoor Al Qasimi, president of the Sharjah Art Foundation; and Venus Lau, artistic director of OCAT Beijing.

Speaking on behalf of the jury, Kim Hong-hee said, “We selected the recipients after discussions that continued until the early morning of August 31,” adding, “Kim received high praise from the jury for presenting an innovative work that enables sound to be experienced through other sensory faculties of the body.”

Meanwhile, Thai artist Korakrit Arunanondchai was jointly honored for Painting with History in a Room Filled with People with Funny Names 3, an installation representing technology and popular culture.

The SeMA Art Award ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. on August 31 at the Seosomun Main Building of the Seoul Museum of Art. Each joint recipient will receive 25 million won in prize money and a trophy created by glass artist Park Sungwon, a professor at the Korea National University of Arts.
