Art Project CO will present Pyoun Daesik’s solo exhibition 《Proxy Data》 from Saturday, November 22 to Saturday, December 20, 2025. This exhibition newly expands the painterly question of “the materialization of time,” which the artist has long explored, and presents, in multiple layers, the structures of time created through color, action, and record.

The exhibition title and major body of work, 《Proxy Data》, begins from the concept of “proxy data,” which refers to indirect data used to infer past climates and environments that cannot be directly observed. The way of reading time contained in matter, as in the annual rings of trees or changes in geological strata, is deeply connected to the structure of time that the artist has long explored through painting.

Since March of this year, Pyoun Daesik has been staying at Jeju Artist Residency Artspace C, continuously recording the colors of nature observed along the coast and in the forest. The colors collected in this way are transformed into acrylic paint, repeatedly layered and ground down, and remain once again in the picture plane as traces of time.

The process of creation and disappearance, in which layers of color are revealed and erased, transforms the sensation of time encountered in nature into painterly strata. The ‘Proxy Data’ series is the body of work that most intensively reveals this inquiry.

Alongside ‘Proxy Data’, which deals with strata of color, this exhibition also presents ‘The Record’ series, which directly records time through the repetitive movement of pencil. The method of densely overlapping the minute traces of graphite directly accumulates “continuing time” on the surface, creating a temporality different from that of the ‘Proxy Data’ series, which reveals traces of time through the material thickness of color.

The two series explore the relationship between time, record, and matter through different painterly languages, presenting the artist’s expanded question of how invisible time can be visualized.

Pyoun Daesik has continued to transform the sensation of time into material layers through the repetition of color and action. The exhibition 《Proxy Data》 shows the point at which his painterly inquiry is combined with the concepts of nature, experience, and record, and expands into a more deepened form.
