Greetings,

The “Nonhuman” Research Group of the Korea Institute for Advanced Study’s Transdisciplinary Research Program will hold its May 2026 symposium as outlined below.

Entitled “Nonhuman: Artistic Mode of Existence,” the symposium seeks to move beyond anthropocentric understandings of perception and art and explore how diverse nonhuman entities—including generative AI, algorithms, objects, and living organisms—are newly configuring the realms of art and sensory experience.

The event will feature a lecture by Professor Lev Manovich, an internationally renowned scholar in digital culture theory and AI media research, on generative AI and the future of artistic creation.

Professor Manovich is a professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and the director of the Cultural Analytics Lab. Through numerous influential publications, including The Language of New Media, he has helped shape the field of contemporary digital culture studies. More recently, he has actively presented artworks created with generative AI and has continued to lead international discourse on media art.

The symposium will also bring together Unmake Lab, the recipient of Korea Artist Prize 2025, co-organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea and the SBS Foundation; research artist Lee Soyo, whose practice explores ecology and the relationships between human and nonhuman beings; and Kim Sung-eun, Head of Operations at Buk-Seoul Museum of Art, who has advanced contemporary curatorial discourse at the intersection of artistic, curatorial, and anthropological practice.

Together, the participants will engage in an interdisciplinary discussion on art and the modes of existence of nonhuman beings.

We warmly invite your participation.
