The 23rd Jeonju International Film Festival will publish six special publications—four in Korean and two in English—that provide a comprehensive introduction to this year’s festival.

These publications include the second edition of J Magazine, first launched last year; Korean- and English-language editions of Films That Never Stop Asking Questions, published in conjunction with a special program and retrospective at the Jeonju International Film Festival; Korean- and English-language editions of Great Expectations : Taehung Pictures 1984-2004; and Borderless Storytellers: Eight Artists Expanding the Boundaries of the Moving Image, a project connected to the 《Expanded Cinema+》 section. Together, they will offer festivalgoers another way to remember and enjoy cinema.

J Magazine is a comprehensive festival guide presented in a magazine format.

In addition to detailed information on the 217 films from 57 countries screening at the festival, it contains interviews with directors, film reviews, special-program commentaries, and information on the festival’s major programs.

This edition features interviews with a wide range of film professionals, including Kogonada, director of the opening film After Yang; Éric Gravel, director of the closing film Full Time; Shin Su-won, director of Hommage; and actor Kang Gil-woo of The Layover.

Reviews of festival selections by renowned programmers and film critics are also expected to help audiences deciding which films to watch.

The magazine also covers useful local information, including bookstores, walking routes, cafés, and shops in Jeonju.

It will be available for purchase at bookstores and cafés throughout Jeonju during the festival.

Films That Never Stop Asking Questions offers a comprehensive and in-depth overview of the cinematic world that director Lee Chang-dong has developed over the past twenty-five years. The book includes distinctive essays on his films and artistic practice by nine Korean and international film critics, as well as a recent interview with the director.

The book was specially conceived in connection with the 《LEE Chang-dong: The Truth of the Invisible》 section of the 23rd festival. It is particularly significant as the first publication devoted to Lee Chang-dong and his films in which the director himself has directly participated.

An English-language edition has also been produced for Lee Chang-dong’s many admirers overseas.

Great Expectations : Taehung Pictures 1984-2004 is both an archival volume on Taehung Pictures, jointly planned by the Jeonju International Film Festival and the Korean Film Archive, and a memorial publication honoring the late Lee Tae-won, former head of the company.

Separate Korean- and English-language editions will be published.

Through vivid interviews, contributed essays, full-color visual materials, and statistical data, the book examines from multiple perspectives the remarkable achievements of Taehung Pictures, which helped lead the revival of Korean cinema from the 1980s through the early 2000s.

Founded in 1984 and still active today, Taehung is one of Korea’s leading film production companies. Its history can be regarded as inseparable from the history of Korean cinema, with its challenges and achievements directly reflecting those of the industry as a whole.

Borderless Storytellers: Eight Artists Expanding the Boundaries of the Moving Image is a collection of interviews conducted by the Jeonju International Film Festival with eight artists who have continued to expand the possibilities of the moving image.

The book was conceived as part of 《Expanded Cinema+》, the festival’s most challenging and experimental section, to deepen audiences’ understanding of the participating artists’ practices.

Moving beyond the conventional framework of introducing only filmmakers, it examines the position of cinema in an age of media convergence and the contemporary artistic zeitgeist through artists from other fields who use moving images as their medium.

As the book’s subtitle suggests, its eight featured artists—Mackerel Safranski, Youngle Keem, Jina Kim, Kim Heecheon, Moojin Brothers, Joowon Song, Oh Jae hyeong, and Soohyun Hwang—are innovative practitioners whose work is grounded in art, literature, virtual reality, dance, and music, and who have fearlessly explored how far the moving image can be expanded into other media.

While all of their works embody cinematic qualities, they also reveal new ways in which narratives can exist.

The publication brings together the distinctive perspectives of artists whose practices have emerged from sustained and rigorous reflection within their respective fields.
