In 2011, KT&G Sangsangmadang launched its first Open Call for Visual Arts Proposals to support artists who would suggest new directions for visual art through innovative forms and content. 《Six Fingers》, an exhibition by Youngle Keem, the inaugural selected artist, opens at KT&G Sangsangmadang Gallery on Friday, September 7.

Moving between history and fiction, the exhibition unfolds the histories of exclusion and fear concealed beneath the surface of the body through storytelling centered on various accounts of “six-fingered people.”

In Korean, “yuksoni” is a derogatory term for a person born with six fingers; in this exhibition, its meaning expands to encompass hopes and fears surrounding lives that exceed human powers, as well as the heterogeneous qualities that we inevitably carry within ourselves. Through complex linguistic experiments, the artist presents archival materials that reveal differing perspectives on six-fingered people in visual form.
