Gallerylux presents Yooyun Yang’s fifth solo exhibition, 《Distrust and Overtrust》, from November 24 to December 29, 2016.

A central theme running throughout Yang’s work is “solitude,” an emotion that is difficult to share with others yet always carries the desire to be shared.

In 《Distrust and Overtrust》, Yang represents emotions akin to solitude, such as melancholy and anger, with a far more detached attitude than in her earlier work. In particular, parts of “mannequin” bodies resembling human forms and rigid faces appear artificially within unfamiliar landscapes.

Art critic Kim Hongki observes in Yang’s picture planes today’s uncertain world, in which “the excess and lack of trust known as distrust and overtrust have not chemically blended into balance, but are merely physically entangled.”

He also explains that Yang’s painting “persistently gives form to scenes of extreme chaos and the ruins of uncertainty. It deliberately suspends forced judgment, inviting viewers to look at and think through the uncertainty of a fatigue society as it is.”
