Suki Seokyeong Kang (41) has been selected as one of the recipients of the Baloise Art Prize, an award presented by the prestigious international art fair Art Basel in Switzerland. According to ONE AND J. Gallery and Art Basel 2018, Kang was chosen alongside Jordanian artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan (33) as this year's winners of the prize.

Participating in the Statements sector with ONE AND J. Gallery, Kang showcased works from her ‘Grandmother Tower’ and ‘Rove and Round’ series, which draw inspiration from memories of her grandmother. This marks the second time a Korean artist has received the Baloise Art Prize, following Haegue Yang in 2007, and it is the first time a Korean gallery has won in the Statements sector.

The Baloise Art Prize is awarded by a jury composed of approximately ten prominent European museum curators. Each year, two artists participating in the Statements sector are selected for the prize. The award includes 30,000 Swiss francs (approximately 33 million KRW) in prize money, and the Baloise Group purchases the winning works and donates them to two European museums.

Kang studied Korean painting at Ewha Womans University and later pursued painting at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London. Working across multiple media, she transforms painterly elements into spatial and sculptural forms. She often references Jeongganbo, a traditional Korean musical notation system from the Joseon Dynasty, using its structural principles to balance color, form, and movement within space, while integrating personal narratives to construct layered storytelling.
