Han Heejung, one of the original “Hongdae goddesses,” released her second full-length album, 《Everyday Stranger》, on the 5th.

Known and loved for her distinctive clear voice and soothing melodies in songs such as The Day We First Met and A Cotton Candy Kid, Han sheds the mask of the “Hongdae goddess” and presents a strikingly unconventional side of herself through this album.

Mixed by Dalparan, widely regarded as a pioneer of electronic music in Korea, and mastered in the United States, the album is notable for its wide-ranging transformations, including a new approach to sound.

The title track, Soil, characterized by its lively disco rhythm, clearly demonstrates this expansion of her musical spectrum. Inspired by plants she had believed were dead coming back to life simply after being watered, the lyrics explore the resilience of soil and plants.

In particular, the quirky opening that repeatedly sounds out “heuk, heuk” (“soil, soil”) and the song’s closing exclamation, “Ppyong, la-la!,” are expected to capture listeners’ attention.

The album also includes an a cappella rearrangement of Please Sing This Song, previously featured on 《Please Tell Us Your Story》, a tribute album dedicated to the surviving victims of Japanese military sexual slavery.

Other tracks include I See You, distinguished by the sweeping strings of a fifty-piece orchestra, and Everyday Stranger, marked by an intense sound and exhilarating beat, revealing a range of diverse and experimental attempts not found in Han Heejung’s previous music.

Han also collaborated with figures from across the arts for this album. In The Sea, which incorporates lyrics from a 2001 poem by poet Heo Su-gyeong, Bomi Kim of the traditional music group Jambinai performs the haegeum.

The album cover artwork was created by artist Moonassi. Novelists Kim Yeon-su and Han Kang also contributed recommendations, expressing their anticipation for Han Heejung’s new album.

Han Heejung is set to begin promotional activities with an appearance at 《Muse in City Festival》, held on the lawn at Olympic Park in Bangi-dong, Seoul, on the 15th.
