Dongwha Pharmaceutical held a competition and awards ceremony with the aim of enhancing the artistic value and popularizing the “jeopseon”(folding fan), which embodies the beauty and elegance of tradition.

The Dongwha Pharmaceutical “2025 Gasong Art Award” ceremony was held on the 17th at the Sejong Museum of Art in Seoul. On this day, the Grand Prize of the Gasong Art Award went to artist Mirae Kim’s Song of the Wind, while the Excellence Award went to Minjung Key’s Overlapping Voices, and the Collaboration Award went to artist Churi’s Flügelschlag(Wingbeat).

The Gasong Art Award expanded from 《Yeoreum Saengsaek Exhibition》, an invitational exhibition that began in 2011 with the motif of the fan, and established the Gasong Art Award in 2012, discovering and supporting hidden talents in the art world.

Grand Prize winner Mirae Kim’s Song of the Wind began from the artist’s personal experience of fanning a child while singing a lullaby. “Wind” carries the dual meanings of physical wind and wish, symbolizing the circulation of love that connects parent and child. The work contains warm memories that arise from small moments in everyday life, conveying to viewers the emotions of care and tenderness.

Minjung Key’s Overlapping Voices, selected for the Excellence Award, is composed through the layering of pansori vocal sounds, the countless stories the artist has experienced, and brushstrokes overlapping in layers to form a single screen. This resembles the process by which a jeopseon folds and unfolds to create new forms, and visually unravels the process by which multiple voices meet and form a single story.

Artist Churi won the Collaboration Award with Flügelschlag(Wingbeat), a collaborative work with Kim Dongsik, master fan maker and holder of National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 128. Based on an interest in “things that are disappearing,” such as endangered species, the work evokes the wingbeats of a bird through the trembling of the fan, conveying experientially the fragility of life and the rhythm of nature.

The jury consisted of Seo Jinseok, Director of the Busan Museum of Art; Jeon Seungbo, Director of the Gyeonggi Museum of Art; Lim Geunhye, Artistic Director; and critic Kim Jangeon.

Yoon Hyunkyung, Executive Director at Dongwha Pharmaceutical, who oversaw the exhibition, said, “The Gasong Art Award has expanded the point of contact between tradition and the contemporary, leading young artists’ creative interpretations,” adding, “We will continue to develop the Gasong Art Award beyond a simple competition into a platform that connects the value of traditional culture with the currents of contemporary art.”
