KAIST announced on the 17th that Professor Yiyun Kang of the Department of Industrial Design has been selected as a speaker for the main stage of TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) 2026, one of the world's most influential knowledge conferences.

Founded in 1984, TED is a U.S.-based non-profit platform dedicated to “ideas worth spreading.” Each year, it brings together leading scholars, innovators, and artists from around the world to shape global discourse.

Among Korean speakers, novelist Kim Young-ha appeared on the TED main stage in 2012, followed by violinist Park Jihae in 2013. In 2011, roboticist Dennis Hong became the first Korean American to speak on the main conference stage.

Professor Kang's selection marks the first time since TED relocated its annual conference to Vancouver, Canada, in 2014 that a Korean national actively working in South Korea—as opposed to a member of the Korean diaspora or a North Korean defector—has been invited to the main stage as both a scholar and an artist.

Yiyun Kang is an internationally recognized media artist and researcher whose practice traverses the boundaries between sensation and technology, materiality and immateriality, including light, moving images, and data. She directs the Experience Design Lab (XD Lab) at KAIST and has continuously explored the convergence of art and technology through collaborations with organizations such as NASA, Google Arts & Culture, and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A).

The TED 2026 annual conference was held from April 13 to 17 at the Vancouver Convention Centre in Canada under the theme “ALL OF US.” On the third day of the conference, April 15, Kang took the main stage to present visual insights and philosophical propositions for a future in which artificial intelligence, humanity, and nature coexist.

Moving beyond the conventional lecture format, her presentation took the form of an “Immersive Talk,” transforming the entire stage into a unified artistic environment.

The talk will be edited and released globally through the official TED website and YouTube channel in July.

Professor Kang remarked, “Humanity currently stands at a critical turning point that will determine the future coexistence of technology and nature. Through this TED stage, I hope to make AI and the climate crisis tangible realities rather than abstract information, and to create an opportunity in which the creative energy of art can expand fragmented individual awareness into a shared sense of solidarity among humanity.”
