Passage of Water, which addresses the global crises of climate change and freshwater depletion facing humanity, was created through collaboration with the United Nations (UN), Google, and NASA. I believe this work itself was perhaps my most public-diplomatic project.”

Media artist Yiyun Kang, Professor in the Department of Industrial Design at KAIST, made these remarks during a lecture titled “Public Diplomacy through the Convergence of Technology and Art,” held on the 18th at the KF Global Center in Seoul. She emphasized that “culture can, by its very nature, perform the role of diplomacy.”

Passage of Water is an interactive media artwork on the theme of climate change, created in collaboration with organizations including the United Nations and Google using satellite data provided exclusively by NASA.

The work has been made permanently accessible to the public through the Google Arts & Culture platform, and Kang's scholarly article on the project was selected as the cover feature of a journal published by MIT Press.

Discussing her recent artistic interest in the relationships between humans, non-humans, and the technologies that connect them, Kang explained, “While living in the United Kingdom during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, I witnessed humanity entering a state of shutdown. For the first time, I saw clear skies and blue seas unlike anything I had experienced before. Watching nature flourish as humanity came to a halt made me realize that the Earth does not belong to humans.” She added, “I began to ask how relevant humanity will remain on this planet.”

Kang continued, “The year-long process of developing this work involved countless meetings connecting California, Seoul, London, and Dubai, and collaborating with institutions such as the UN, Google, and NASA. The process itself constituted an act of public diplomacy, and I hope more artists will make the convergence of technology and art possible through such activities.”

The lecture also attracted a diverse audience of around seventy participants, including admirers who had attended all of Kang's recent exhibitions and aspiring media artists, leading to an enthusiastic question-and-answer session.

The event was part of the seventh Public Diplomacy Week, held at the KF Global Center, which features a broad range of programs—including lectures, performances, films, storytelling events, and workshops—and brings together participants from thirty-three foreign embassies and cultural institutes in Korea, as well as twelve international organizations, universities, and public institutions, including the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Since opening on the 8th, the event has presented more than seventy diverse programs over twenty days, continuing daily through the 27th.

To commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the KF Global Center, the Korea Foundation (KF), under the theme “Connecting with the World, Together,” organized the festival to provide opportunities for the Korean public to engage with global cultures and public diplomacy initiatives.

Programs include a Colombian coffee-tasting workshop on the 22nd, a public diplomacy talk on the 24th featuring Professor Choe Jae Chun of Ewha Womans University and Slovenian Ambassador Jernej Müller, and a workshop on creating traditional Polish handicraft “Koniaków Lace” on the 25th, offering rare opportunities to experience cultures from around the world firsthand through people-to-people public diplomacy.
