Installation view of 《Vanishing》 © Yiyun Kang

“We are turning away from the widespread extinction of living species.
… This work is a tribute to the lives disappearing because of humanity.”

Yiyun Kang’s Vanishing is on view through November 30 on the monumental LED screen at COEX Square, measuring 81 meters wide and 20 meters high.

Vanishing draws attention to the Sixth Mass Extinction caused by humanity—distinct from previous mass extinctions triggered by external events such as asteroid impacts or massive volcanic eruptions—in which human activity is driving species to extinction at an unprecedented scale and rate, eroding the biodiversity of the planet.

The fragmented beings that appear in the work allude to forms of life that once existed on Earth but no longer do, having disappeared because of a single species: humankind. In doing so, the work proposes the necessity of reflecting on the “vanishing” we have brought about as a prerequisite for genuine growth and continued existence.
