AN Chorong’s solo exhibition 《Natural Gene》(Taste House, 2020) will be held at Taste House from June 17 to July 18, 2020. The exhibition presents images from the backs of postcards sent by the artist’s friend from travel destinations between 2007 and 2011, as well as photographs taken by AN Chorong during business-trip/travel destinations between 2013 and 2019.

The images from the backs of the postcards are realized in the exhibition space as small landscapes inside locket pendant necklaces, as backgrounds for the exhibition enlarged to an ultra-wide-screen ratio, and as printed images trimmed, reduced, and enlarged according to the format of Vogue Girl magazine.

AN Chorong’s photographs are presented as 1st Try and 2nd Try snapshots of the same subjects taken with a small 35mm film camera at various business-trip/travel destinations, as well as photographs taken in a single cut.

The photographs, taken twice as if out of habit, slightly alter focus and composition, or show passersby at travel destinations appearing or disappearing, revealing again what the photographic gaze had intended to say, while leaving the trivial yet serious time that occurred between the first and second photographs like an image attached to a message.

The images taken in a single cut are placed inside various ready-made frames and presented like home-decor accessories above the horizon of a sunset landscape received from a friend’s postcard.

Before the exhibition, a book of the same title, Natural Gene, was produced. Beginning with a scanned image of a passage describing the scene in which Psyche and Cupid first meet, and ending with a scanned image of a booklet containing the lyrics to Sade’s “Maureen,” the book contains all of the images presented in this exhibition, arranged in an order determined by the artist.

The postcards sent by a friend while traveling around the world, and the photographic images taken and selected by the artist AN Chorong at other travel destinations after time had passed, gather across various media, become materialized, and are transmitted through this exhibition and the book ‘Natural Gene’.

Through a photobook that flows along a time of broken and bent lines, and through that book unfolding into space and passing through various stylized methodologies for showing photographic images, AN Chorong quietly watches over things that passed by without arriving.
