SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation announced on the 1st that works by An Jungju and Jun Sojung have been selected for donation to the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

According to SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation, the acquisition was carried out in collaboration with Saint Laurent Korea, which has supported artists across various fields including visual art, film, and music. Two media artists who had previously participated in SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation’s exhibition programs were selected, and one work by each artist was acquired and donated to the Stedelijk Museum.

This marks the first acquisition of works by Korean artists since Nam June Paik. The initiative also reflects the museum’s broader effort under director Rein Wolfs to incorporate the principles of diversity and inclusion throughout its institutional programming and operations.

An Jungju, recipient of the Excellence Prize at The 17th SONGEUN Art Award, will donate Their war 2 - Israel (2005). In this work, the artist separates sound from recorded footage, reconstructs it into newly composed music, and recombines it with the moving image. Through the images and sounds of the barrier between Israel and Palestine, the work reflects upon the political situation shared with Korea.

Jun Sojung, recipient of The 14th SONGEUN Art Award, will donate Despair to be reborn (2020). Inspired by the poetry of Yi Sang, who was both a poet and architect, the work poses questions and experiments with attitudes toward reconsidering the present through the past within the continuity of history.
