Sung Rok Choi’s exhibition 《layers and frames》 will be held at Space Sun+ in Samcheong-dong from November 23 to 29. Through digital animation and video works, Sung Rok Choi explores contemporary landscapes and events as mediated and constructed through new media technologies.

The works presented in this exhibition consist of printed digital paintings originally used in the artist’s 2015 digital 2D animation ‘Scroll Down Journey’ and the 2016 work Operation Mole-Endgame. Within the formal structure of animation, layers and frames—which ordinarily function as the foundational units of moving images—are here fixed onto independent surfaces, allowing viewers to focus on the image itself at its most minimal unit.

The exhibition may be understood as an experimental attempt to reconsider how the disappearance of fixed frames and narrative content, the vacant landscapes that remain, and objects that have lost their purpose within the frame can reconstruct the continuity and narrative of the original work through the alternate flat format of digital print.

Through this exhibition, audiences are invited to consider how frames and layers, detached from moving images and transformed into fixed images, might generate entirely new narratives of their own.
