Installation view of 《Us and Them》 © Project Space SARUBIA

Lee Wan has been working on his project to examine a range of criteria through which individuals and groups are organized and classified together. For the exhibition at Sarubia, he asked all of his participants who are current residents in South Korea, the same question of “What is Us?” and titled his final presentation 《Us and Them》.

He recruited thirty participants for this project which visualizes a gap between the individual and group, between the objective and subjective standards. He initially made them to draw one-centimeter, and with different physical measurements gauged by participants, thirty different-sized chairs were finally made, along with one based upon the International Standardization.

Personal interviews of all participants responding to the question of “What is Us?” were recorded as a form of video.

The exhibition shows the differences among individuals within a group; while the individuals tend to be immersed into collectivity, they can also present their own perspectives related to a social conscience and "objective" criteria. In the exhibition, his personal collection of objects, memorabilia as a form of the reminiscent of Korean history from the modern times to today will be also displayed.

For the collection provides the viewer with an opportunity to recognize the discrepancy between personal memories and collective history, as well as to witness the social and historical traces to form “Us and them.”
