The large-scale media façade festival 《Seoul Light DDP 2024 Fall》 opens on Thursday, August 29, illuminating downtown Seoul with spectacular displays. Organized in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the opening of Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), this year’s event takes place under the theme 《Future Log: Recording the Future with Light》, expressing moments that connect the past, present, and future through light.

At the center of the program is Poem of Time. Media artist and professor at Seoul National University Je Baak directed the video production, while Yoon Sang oversaw the musical direction. Together, they transformed the eternal sense of time and poetic abstraction pursued by artist Kim Whanki into a media art experience infused with accessibility and contemporary sensibility.

In addition, leading Korean artists collaborated across digital design, visual art, and music to reinterpret Kim Whanki’s original works through media art that merges advanced technology with artistic expression.

Poem of Time is structured into three chapters based on nine representative works from different periods of Kim Whanki’s career: One Dot – The Beginning of the Universe, Dancing Dots – Life and the World, and The Heart Within the Dot – Pure Love and Longing.

The work begins with Kim Whanki’s lifelong inquiry into causality and connection. In Poem of Time, Je Baak traces the artist’s forty-year artistic journey in reverse chronological order, connecting dots within a vast spatial composition to express how all existence is bound within causality.

Je Baak, the project’s chief video director, commented, “Through the process of transforming the work of a world-renowned master into media art, it was deeply meaningful to revive the artist’s original paintings through contemporary digital technology and create a work that allows audiences to imagine both the past and the future.”

As music director, Yoon Sang interpreted the quiet and abstract atmosphere evoked by the work’s title through his own distinctive sensibility and delicate musical rhythm. Like painting on a canvas, he refined each musical element individually to respond to shifts in movement, texture, and color, weaving sound together as though dividing the work into musical movements.

Yoon Sang remarked, “Confronting the mysterious digital transformation of Suhwa Kim Whanki’s works, I continuously reflected and contemplated throughout the process. Because I approached this project with deep personal admiration for Kim Whanki, I am pleased that such an engaging and highly accomplished work was created.”

Following this, media art label VERSEDAY will present INVITATION, commemorating the 10th anniversary of DDP. The project delivers an invitation to the world, celebrating DDP’s role as a media art platform dreamed of by countless artists.

INVITATION visualizes the past ten years of DDP through geometric movements of points, lines, and planes, combining transformations of various material textures with collaged anniversary posters to express DDP’s future possibilities and vision.

Beginning with its opening ceremony on Thursday, August 29, 《Seoul Light DDP 2024 Fall》 will be presented free of charge every evening at DDP through Sunday, September 8, with screenings every thirty minutes from 8 PM to 10 PM.

Meanwhile, during the period of 《Seoul Light DDP》, 《DDP Design & Art》 will also take place throughout DDP, featuring installations by internationally renowned artists and offering Seoul citizens accessible opportunities to experience design, culture, and the arts.

Lee Kyungdon, CEO of the Seoul Design Foundation, stated, “《Seoul Light DDP 2024 Fall》 will present audiences with new works in which art and technology are perfectly harmonized through the participation of leading artists, delivering a moving experience distinct from the original artworks themselves.”
