Artist Je Baak’s A Journey won the Grand Prix at the inaugural VH Award, established by Hyundai Motor Group to support the creative activities of emerging Korean artists.

The VH Award is a competition organized to discover media art works to be screened at Vision Hall, Hyundai Motor Group’s media art gallery.

This year’s competition brought together internationally renowned curators in the field of media art as jurors, including Martin Honzik, Chief Curator of the Ars Electronica Center in Austria; Lauren Cornell, curator at the New Museum in the United States; and Choi Heungchul, curator at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, enhancing the competition’s level of expertise.

Je Baak’s Grand Prix-winning work, A Journey, is a media art piece that employs 3D animation techniques to portray hardship and failure encountered in the desert as a natural part of life itself.

Hyundai Motor Group previously provided each of the three finalists in the VH Award — Je Baak, Jang SukJoon, and Sungjae Lee — with KRW 30 million in production support. In addition, Je Baak, the Grand Prix winner, will receive an extra KRW 50 million in prize money.

On the 21st, Hyundai Motor Group held the VH Award ceremony at Mabuk Campus, its human resources development center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, where Vision Hall is located. Approximately 100 attendees were present, including media art professionals, competition applicants, and company representatives.

A representative of Hyundai Motor Group stated, “We hope the VH Award will contribute to broadening the foundation of the arts and culture sector, and we will continue discovering creative content so that our employees across the group can experience a wide range of cultural and artistic programs.”
