The Hermès Foundation announced on the 15th that Jang Minseung (36, photography) has been selected as the recipient of the 2014 Hermès Foundation Missulsang.

The awarded work, voiceless, was created in the aftermath of the Sewol Ferry Disaster last year. It expresses the artist’s empathy with the grief of the victims and their families, while also conveying a commitment not to forget.

The artist borrows from Japanese haiku, akin to a eulogy, but instead of presenting it as text, he visualizes it through a sign language performance video. The background sound accompanying the performance of a girl who appears submerged underwater includes recordings the artist collected himself at Paengmok Port, such as the sound of waves and the fluttering of ribbons.

The awardee, the son of film director Jang Sun-woo, graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Chung-Ang University and has worked across various fields including film music production, furniture making, and photography. He also participated in the music production for the film Bad Movie (1997), directed by Jang Sun-woo.
