The Korea Foundation (KF, President Ki-hwan Kim), in collaboration with the Gwangju Biennale Foundation (CEO Yang-woo Park), will simultaneously present the exhibition 《The Book of Distance》 at KF Gallery (Suhadong, Jung-gu, Seoul) from September 6 to October 18 and at the National Asian Culture Center (ACC), Culture Creation Hall, Complex Exhibition Hall 6, Gwangju, from September 7 to December 1.

This exhibition is the first collaborative project following the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Korea Foundation and the Gwangju Biennale Foundation on July 31. In celebration of the 30th anniversary of ASEAN-Korea dialogue relations, both institutions have designated "Korea and Southeast Asia" as the key theme and curated this exhibition accordingly.

At KF Gallery, 《The Book of Distance, part1》 will showcase over 50 works by a total of eight artists (or collectives) from Korea and Southeast Asia. The participating Korean artists include Kim Zai, a participating artist of this year’s Gwangju Biennale; Lee Woo-sung, a 2018 Gwangju Biennale participant who records contemporary life through painting; and Ikki Bawi Krrr (Ko Kyul, Kim Jung-won, and Cho Ji-eun), who participated in Documenta Fifteen (2022, Kassel) and the 2023 Gwangju Biennale. The Southeast Asian artists include Zulkefli Jais (Malaysia), who won the Emerging Artist Award at the National Art Gallery of Malaysia (2023) for his installation work; Mary Pakinee (Thailand); Jakrawal Nilthamrong (Thailand), a film director who received international recognition with awards such as the Tokyo FILMeX Grand Prize (2021) and the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival (2015); and Filipino artists Avie Felix and Adjani Arumpac, invited in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Korea-Philippines diplomatic relations.

At the National Asian Culture Center in Gwangju, 《The Book of Distance, part2》 will feature works by seven Korean artist teams. Participating artists No Jae-woon, Baek Jungki, Seo Dong-joo, Song Sung-jin, and Jung Se-in—who have collaborated with the Korea Foundation—will present works that explore Southeast Asian history and contemporary culture. Additionally, Lee Woo-sung and Ikki Bawi Krrr will introduce works that connect Korea and Southeast Asia.

Ki-hwan Kim, President of the Korea Foundation, stated, "This exhibition will serve as a platform to strengthen cultural exchange between Korea and Southeast Asian nations through the medium of art and to discuss future directions for collaboration. Moving forward, the Korea Foundation and the Gwangju Biennale Foundation will continue to deepen international exchange through close cooperation."

《The Book of Distance》 is free to the public, and exhibition-related updates and events can be found on the Korea Foundation's official website, Instagram, and Facebook.
