Basic House, a casual brand operated by TBH Global, has launched three types of ‘Wearable Hangul T-Shirts’ that reinterpret Hangul as a fashion object through collaborations with three renowned artists.

The ‘Wearable Hangul T-Shirts’ are part of Basic House’s “TALK.OREA” project, which aims to elevate the most Korean elements into fashion and to develop our cultural heritage within everyday life. The collection was created in collaboration with three artists to commemorate Hangul Day.

For this campaign, three artists each designed a distinctive T-shirt: artist Jeong Jae Wan created the Holo Arirang T-shirt by hand-drawing the Hangul lyrics of Han-dol’s song while singing it himself; artist Changchang Yoo designed the Crisp Memory T-shirt, inspired by the similarity between the pronunciation of the Hangul consonant ‘ㄱ’ and the word “memory”; and artist Anna Chang created the The Moon Rises T-shirt, visualizing the waxing and changing phases of the moon as a motif rooted in Korean sentiment.

Considering the characteristics of Hangul, which we use daily in our lives, the design and colors of the T-shirts were also optimized for everyday wear, using comfortable materials and versatile color schemes.

First launched in 2013, the ‘Wearable Hangul’ campaign is part of a Hangul graphic project jointly developed by Basic House and the lifestyle project group Ten Years After Lab.

In 2014, the ‘Wearable Hangul Exhibition’ held by Basic House and Ten Years After Lab showcased over 20 T-shirt designs by artists from various fields who reinterpreted Hangul in their own unique ways. The exhibition demonstrated the potential of Hangul as a fashion object, and six limited-edition T-shirts sold out within one hour of release, drawing significant attention.

Basic House also donated all proceeds from the sales of these T-shirts to the founding fund for the Hangul Development Center.

Meanwhile, amid the recent rise in anti-Japanese sentiment and the boycott movement against Japanese products, Basic House has relaunched the ‘Wearable Hangul’ campaign following its ‘Remind Doma Spirit (105th Anniversary of Ahn Jung-geun’s Harbin Action)’ campaign.
