The 24th Jeonju International Film Festival (Co-Directors Min Sung-wook and Jung Joon-ho) announced on the 6th that actor and multidisciplinary artist Bek Hyunjin has been selected as the ‘J Special: Programmer of the Year.’ ‘J Special: Programmer of the Year’ is a section that selects a film professional active in the cultural and arts field as a programmer, allowing them to choose films according to their own cinematic perspective and taste to present to audiences. It was first introduced at the 22nd Jeonju International Film Festival.

The first ‘Programmer of the Year’ was actress Ryu Hyun-kyung, followed by director Yeon Sang-ho, contributing to establishing it as a representative section of the Jeonju International Film Festival. The film professional selected for the third edition of the ‘J Special: Programmer of the Year’ section is Bek Hyunjin, an actor actively working across various fields including acting, directing, music, and visual art.

Starting with the film Flower Island(2001), he has met audiences through numerous films including Poppy (2002), The Day He Arrives (2011), Eungyo (2012), Gyeongju〉(2014), The Exclusive: Beat the Devil’s Tattoo (2015), Keys to the Heart (2017), Samjin Company English Class (2019), and 〈The Policeman’s Lineage (2022). He has also appeared in television dramas such as “Tomorrow, with You,” “My Fellow Citizens!,” “Taxi Driver,” “The Devil Judge,” “Happiness,” and “Gaus Electronics,” showcasing solid and distinctive acting skills.

Bek Hyunjin, who is also a musician and painter, debuted in 1997 with the full-length album “Break-even Point” by Uh Uh Boo Project, and has continued his activities as a member of the groups Bangbaek and Uh Uh Boo Project. He was also selected as a recipient of the Korea Artist Prize at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2017 and held solo exhibitions 《Beyond Words》(2021) and 《Public Hiding: Public Memory and Shared Bonds》(2021).

Bek Hyunjin’s ‘J Special: Programmer of the Year’ selection consists of a total of seven feature and short films. These include his own directed works 〈The End〉(2009) and 〈An Eternal Joke〉(2011); a trilogy by director Luis Buñuel—〈The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie〉(1972), 〈The Phantom of Liberty〉(1974), and 〈That Obscure Object of Desire〉(1977); as well as films he appeared in, including director Jang Ryul’s 〈Gyeongju〉(2014) and director Kim Ji-hyun’s 〈Poppy〉(2002). These will be presented at this year’s Jeonju International Film Festival.

Bek Hyunjin stated, “Luis Buñuel is one of the artists I find particularly unique among those I am interested in. I especially enjoy the trilogy selected for this screening—it is very entertaining. I chose it thinking it would be enjoyable to watch together with people in a theater,” explaining his reason for selecting Buñuel’s trilogy.

Bek Hyunjin will also serve as the moderator for the ‘J Special Class,’ a program held with guests immediately after the screenings of the ‘J Special: Programmer of the Year’ films. The ‘J Special Class’ will be held three times, each lasting 60 minutes after the screenings. The first session will follow the screening of Gyeongju, the second after PoppyThe End, and An Eternal Joke, and the final third session after the screening of Buñuel’s trilogy (That Obscure Object of Desire).

Meanwhile, the 24th Jeonju International Film Festival will be held from Thursday, April 27 to Saturday, May 6, in the Jeonju Film Street area.
