Park Kyungkun (39), Bek Hyunjin (45), Song Sanghee (47), and Sunny Kim (48) have been selected for the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s ‘Korea Artist Prize 2017’ exhibition.

This is a representative award system of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, jointly organized with the SBS Cultural Foundation since 2012.

The SBS Cultural Foundation provides each selected artist with a grant of 40 million KRW for creative support. The final award recipient, to be announced through a second round of evaluation during the exhibition period, will be named the ‘2017 Artist of the Year’ and will receive an additional grant of 10 million KRW.

The four artists selected as SBS Cultural Foundation-sponsored artists in 2017 will prepare their projects through close collaboration with the museum over the next seven months and will participate in the exhibition 《Korea Artist Prize 2017》, to be held from September 13 to February 18 of the following year in Galleries 1 and 2 of MMCA Seoul.

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art stated that the selected artists were determined through rigorous evaluation, including recommendations by an Artist Recommendation Committee composed of art professionals appointed by the Korea Artist Prize Steering Committee, as well as studio visit interviews and presentations conducted by a panel of distinguished art experts from Korea and abroad.

The jury comprehensively considered various aspects such as the originality of themes and expressions in the recommended artists’ works, as well as their potential for communication with domestic and international audiences, before finalizing the supported artists. The jury members included Bartomeu Marí, Director of MMCA; Jessica Morgan, Art Director of the Dia Art Foundation; Philippe Pirotte, Director of the Städelschule and Portikus; and Kim Hong-hee, former Director of the Seoul Museum of Art.

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the SBS Cultural Foundation have also been operating an Overseas Activity Fund system for the ‘Korea Artist Prize’ since 2016 to support the continued international activities of participating artists.

For this purpose, the SBS Cultural Foundation evaluates major overseas projects planned by the artists over the next four years and provides up to 20 million KRW per artist as production support.

In the 2015 and 2016 evaluations for the Overseas Activity Fund, support was provided to artists Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho, who participated as Korean Pavilion artists at the 2015 Venice Biennale, and this support extended to their solo exhibition 《News from Nowhere》 scheduled at Magasin III in Stockholm in 2017.

In addition, overseas project support has been confirmed for artists Koo Donghee (Sharjah Biennial 2017), Lee Sook-Kyung (International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale 2017), and Jang Jia (Atlantic Project 2017–2018), as well as Lim Minouk, Ham Yangah, Cho Haejun, Kim Hongsok, Shin Meekyoung, and Kim Kira, contributing to the promotion of Korean contemporary art abroad.
