Western painter Hong Kyoungtack (Seoul, 46) has been selected as the recipient of the 14th LEEINSUNG Art Prize.

This art prize, established to honor the artistic world and spirit of Western painter Lee Insung (1912–1950), saw 14 nominated candidates from across the country compete.

In the case of Hong Kyoungtack, not only his active artistic practice to date but also his high potential and capability to lead the future of Korean art were highly evaluated.

In addition, consideration was given to the fact that his work opens new possibilities for post-photo painting through a formative language that blends design and painting, pop art and realism, as well as a universality that resonates with a wide audience.

In particular, this year’s judging marked the first time for the LEEINSUNG Art Prize that five art professionals from both Korea and abroad, including Taiwan and Japan, participated as jurors. Through intensive discussion and evaluation, Hong Kyoungtack was unanimously selected in the third round of deliberation.

Hong Kyoungtack, recorded as the youngest recipient in the history of the LEEINSUNG Art Prize, was born in Seoul in 1968 and graduated from Seoul Arts High School and the Department of Painting at Kyungwon University.

He has been actively exhibiting through solo exhibitions and invited exhibitions at venues such as Doosan Gallery in New York, Hong Kong, China, and Seoul, as well as Gallery Hyundai and ARKO Art Center. He has also participated in major exhibitions including special exhibitions of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art collection and the 20th anniversary exhibition of the Gwangju Museum of Art.

The award ceremony will be held at 5 PM on November 6 at Daegu Culture and Arts Center, in conjunction with the opening of an invitational exhibition by last year’s 13th award recipient, Jung Jongmi.
