Audio Visual Pavilion presents Park Meena’s 《Scream》, May 17-June 30, 2016. A continuation of Park’s 2005 solo exhibition of the same name, this exhibition features eight new works in addition to the original roster of thirty canvases. The icons and the leitmotifs of the series ‘Scream’ serve as a starting point and enable the artist to explore the application and composition of color and form.

Her new square canvases, ranging from 100 cm to 180 cm in height, depict various permutations of a head thrown back in a fit of screaming overlaid with images of hearts, rainbow-colored rings, silver stars, grids, a black-and-white checkerboard, among other patterns.

‘Scream’ conjures Charlie Brown’s round face, abstracted as an icon, which at times dominates the foreground, and in others, retreats to the back. Charlie Brown is the protagonist of Charles Schulz’s comic series Peanuts, which celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2015. The details of this character, like a familiar, oft-repeated story, are difficult to recall.

Rows of upside down and repeating heart shapes, fields of silver stars, and grids determine the relative size and position of Charlie Brown’s face on canvas. The screaming mouth reveals a heart at the back of the throat, and the surrounding rings visualize sound waves echoing low- and high-pitched voices.
