Gwangju Bank (President Song Jong-wook) held the award ceremony for the 4th “Gwangjuhwaru Art Competition” on the 13th.

According to Gwangju Bank, the “Gwangjuhwaru Art Competition” is the only nationwide competition in Korea exclusively for artists working in Korean painting. Applications opened on December 1 of last year, and five winners were selected through a multi-stage evaluation process consisting of a portfolio review, artwork evaluation, and in-depth interviews.

Every year, an exhibition titled “Ten Artists of Gwangjuhwaru” has been held at the National Asia Culture Center to present works by the competition’s award winners and finalists. However, this year the exhibition was postponed as social distancing measures were raised to Level 2 due to the resurgence of COVID-19.

The Grand Prize was awarded to artist Donghwan Lee, who received a prize of KRW 30 million along with the opportunity to receive support for a solo exhibition or participation in an overseas residency program. Artist Jihyun Jung received the Excellence Award with a prize of KRW 20 million. Artists Sejin Kwon, Myungjin Kim, and Hyunwook Cha received the Merit Awards, each receiving KRW 10 million.

The Grand Prize winner, Donghwan Lee, is a local painter who graduated from the Department of Painting at Chosun University and completed his graduate studies at Chung-Ang University.

Song Jong-wook, President of Gwangju Bank, stated, “Together with international art festivals such as the Gwangju Biennale and the Jeonnam International Ink Biennale, we hope that our region—where ‘Gwangjuhwaru’ is held—can become a hub for revitalizing Korean painting. As the representative bank of the Gwangju–Jeonnam region, we will continue to support cultural initiatives so that the citizens can enjoy the culture and arts of the ‘City of Art and Culture, Gwangju.’”

“Gwangjuhwaru” is a cultural initiative organized by Gwangju Bank with the hope that Gwangju will become a stronghold for preserving the tradition and lineage of Korean painting. The competition was first launched in 2016 and has since invited Korean painting artists from across the country to participate.
