The award ceremony for the selected artists of the 22nd Danwon Art Festival 2021, organized by Ansan City and the Ansan Cultural Foundation, was held on the 3rd at Gallery 1 of Danwon Art Museum. The event was held in a modest format and attended by Ansan Mayor Yoon Hwa-seop, Ansan City Council Chair Park Eun-kyung, Danwon Art Festival Steering Committee Chair Park Sung-hyun, the awardees and their families, and members of the art community.

Now in its 22nd year, the Danwon Art Festival was launched in 1999 to cultivate and creatively inherit the artistic spirit and achievements of Danwon Kim Hong-do. Since transitioning to an open call for selected artists in 2015, the festival has supported artists’ creative activities through various follow-up programs.

This year, under a newly revised application system, a total of 370 artists applied. After the first round of portfolio reviews and a second round of interviews, ten artists were selected and given the opportunity to participate in the exhibition. From among them, one artist was awarded the Grand Prize of the Danwon Art Festival and one artist received the Popular Artist Award.

Artist Junhyung Park received the Danwon Art Grand Prize, while Sejin Kwon was awarded the Popular Artist Award. The selected artists included Youngwoo Kim, Gwangho Na, Seoyeon Park, Jooyoung Park, Donghyun Seo, Yeowoon Lee, Youngho Lee, and Yoonkuk Cho.

Notably, the Popular Artist Award, introduced for the first time this year, was determined separately from the jury process. Visitors to the exhibition voted for their favorite artist during the exhibition period from October 8 to October 31, giving the award additional significance.

Each selected artist had previously received a KRW 2 million exhibition support grant, and the Grand Prize winner received an additional KRW 20 million.

Meanwhile, the selected artists’ exhibition titled 《Space Behind the Surface》 attracted many visitors despite restrictions such as a reservation system and limited simultaneous entry due to COVID-19. As social distancing measures have eased under the government’s phased return to normal life, the exhibition is now open to visitors without restrictions and will continue until Saturday, November 6, at Gallery 1 of Danwon Art Museum.
