From June 15 to July 7, New Spring Project presents the two-person exhibition 《Stretching into a Shape》 featuring Jaeyeon Yoo and Mijeong Lee.

Both artists, women of the same generation, transfer universal yet intimate imagery onto multiple surfaces. Moving beyond the conventional rectangular canvas, they create paintings on directly cut, newly shaped supports. In this exhibition, Yoo and Lee combine representational drawings of bodies—such as fingers and faces—with symbolic imagery including sparkles, stars, hearts, and moons, assembling them across varied dimensions. This exhibition highlights the similarities and differences in their artistic worlds, captivating viewers with vibrant color palettes while fluidly traversing the boundary between painting and sculpture.

The exhibition title derives from the phrase “Stretching the canvas area into a shape,” referring to the process of creating shaped canvases. Originally used in 1960s America to describe color field abstraction employing shaped canvases, the phrase suggests stretching or expanding the canvas beyond its rectangular format.

In Korean translation, however, the word “stretching” also evokes the light exercise that refreshes the body and mind. This slightly unexpected nuance introduces layered meanings into the exhibition. Through the playful suggestion of making the concept of flatness “stretch,” the title reveals the artists’ shared desire to transform immaterial elements into physical, material form through painting. It also reflects the playful tone present in both artists’ practices, encouraging more flexible thinking between flatness and dimensionality, and between the social and the intimate.
