The Ilwoo Photography Award is an award program established by the Ilwoo Foundation, affiliated with the Hanjin Group, as part of its cultural and arts support initiatives. The award is broadly divided into two categories—“Photographer of the Year” and “Special Photographer of the Year”—and was created with the aim of discovering and fostering artists working across all photography-related fields, including fine art, documentary, and photojournalism. Since its inception in 2009, the award has annually selected outstanding photographers and provided them with opportunities for photobook publication and exhibitions.

In terms of publication, the foundation established a partnership with Hatje Cantz, a renowned German art publisher, for the production and distribution of photobooks, thereby supporting the international introduction of talented Korean photographers, particularly within Europe. For exhibitions, the Ilwoo Foundation has supported artists by organizing large-scale solo exhibitions at Ilwoo Space, enabling them to further develop and expand their artistic practices.

This exhibition has been conceived to bring together works by past award recipients in one place, offering an opportunity to reflect on the history of the award while experiencing once again the distinctive artistic worlds of these photographers. The 18 artists who have been recognized through the Ilwoo Photography Award are currently active across various fields—including the art world, photography, and media—both in Korea and internationally, and continue to demonstrate remarkable achievements, raising anticipation for their future work.
