《Vertical Impulse, Horizontal Impulse》 is a collection exhibition composed of selected works from the museum’s holdings that exhibit structural forms of “verticality” and “horizontality.”

The exhibition begins with the fundamental formal elements of “vertical” and “horizontal” in visual expression. However, such formal structures ultimately become specific images only when combined with the “impulses” that drive the artist. In this sense, the exhibition title, 《Vertical Impulse, Horizontal Impulse》, signifies the conjunction of basic formal elements and the impulses of the artist—that is, the will to art.

Furthermore, in order to actively encompass the viewers’ own vertical or horizontal “impulses” within the exhibition space, the presentation is organized into separate rooms dedicated to works with vertical and horizontal structures respectively. Works with vertical structures range from geometric forms based on simplicity and strict rules to those that emphasize psychological effects, such as the human desire to stand and ascend.

In contrast, works with horizontal structures, rather than focusing solely on form, draw attention to the relationship between space and form. While the room of vertical structures emphasizes tension and a sense of instability, the room of horizontal structures offers an emotional sense of relaxation—inviting viewers to walk, observe, and rest.
