Award ceremony of the 2nd Sambo Art Award © Daegu Foundation for Culture and Arts

The recipients of the 2nd Sambo Art Award—established through donations from the Sambo Cultural Foundation and Sambo Motors—were announced as artist Yuyoung Hong (sculpture/installation) and artist Hosu Lee (installation). The award ceremony was held on Friday, September 6, at 4:00 PM in the Jungjeong Hall of Daegu Arts Center.

The Daegu Foundation for Culture and Arts opened a nationwide open call in June for the selection of artists for the 2nd Sambo Art Award. A total of 315 artists applied across most genres of fine art—including painting, sculpture/installation, photography, printmaking, calligraphy, and minhwa—resulting in a competition ratio of approximately 157:1.

Based on consultations with an operations committee composed of experts in relevant fields, the Foundation recommended jurors for the award selection. The jury panel—consisting of art critics, curators, gallery directors, and columnists from both within and outside the region—conducted a comprehensive and fair evaluation based on artistic merit, potential for development, creative practice, and engagement with contemporaneity, ultimately selecting the two artists.

Artist Yuyoung Hong (born 1975) received a BFA in Sculpture from Ewha Womans University, an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Iowa, and a PhD in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, University of London. Hong has actively presented solo and group exhibitions at institutions such as Ikiligu Gallery, Space Mom Museum of Art, Cheongju Museum of Art, and Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art. Her career also includes selection for the Cheongju Museum of Art Exhibition Project (2023), a special selection by the Korea Art History Museum (2022), and an exhibition at the Korean Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. (2018), among other accomplishments.

Artist Hosu Lee (born 1990) received a BFA in Fine Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has since presented works in solo and group exhibitions at venues including Windmill, DGB Gallery, Daegu Art Factory, and Het HEM. His career includes participation in Creative Process (Arts Council Korea, 2024), the Multidisciplinary Arts Support Program (Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, 2023), an invited solo exhibition with an accompanying prize at Greenpoint Gallery (Brooklyn, 2020), and the John Quincy Fellowship (Chicago, 2018), among numerous exhibitions and awards.

The jury stated, “It is encouraging to see such a large number of applicants nationwide, even though this is an art award held in a specific region.” They added, “We focused on works that actively expand modes of expression through the use of diverse media, maintain artistic integrity, and incorporate each artist’s distinctive subject matter. Ultimately, we selected works that reflect our lives and the world around us while fostering empathy and communication with audiences through relatable themes.”

Each award recipient receives a prize of 10 million KRW, and a commemorative exhibition featuring the award-winning artists will be held in the second half of 2025 at the Daegu Arts Center Art Museum.

In her acceptance remarks, Yuyoung Hong stated, “I began my artistic career in 2004 with an exhibition at a gallery in Seoul, and this year marks 20 years of my practice. There were many challenges in persistently pursuing fine art, particularly sculptural work. Receiving the Sambo Art Award will be a great driving force for my future practice. I sincerely thank all the jury members, the Sambo Cultural Foundation, and the Daegu Foundation for Culture and Arts.”

Hosu Lee, who received the award alongside Hong, commented, “It is a great honor to receive the 2nd Sambo Art Award. After a long period living abroad, I returned to my hometown and resumed my practice, which included difficult and challenging moments. The support of those around me—especially my family—was a tremendous source of strength. I will continue to grow as an artist, dedicating myself wholeheartedly to my work with perseverance.”

Meanwhile, on the day of the award ceremony, the opening of commemorative exhibitions by the recipients of the 1st Sambo Art Award—artists Seunghee Lee and Joonsik Park—was also held. The exhibition runs through Saturday, September 28, at Exhibition Halls 6–10 of the Daegu Arts Center.
