Prologue

A flutter of wings pierces the white night and lingers in one’s mouth. The place where the white hawk once stayed becomes a corridor of whispered confessions and long-buried wishes by one’s eyes.

In Joo Hyeongjoon’s paintings, the gaze of a dreamer who remains awake reaches the far end of a long corridor. Two hands sweeping up fading memories from a distant floor meet the movement of three creatures—black, gray, and white bodies; reptile, bird, and fish intertwined into one—rushing through and soaring across the hallway. The mingling of dense, medium, and light ink—rain and blood indistinguishably blended—forms the sand that builds a dream and a dreamlike utopia.

As one follows the sound of someone’s prayer through the winding columns and walls, the dreamer’s closed eyes crown themselves with a false halo. In this strange painting, the protagonist of the play—are they a fool or a saint? The reader who turns the sandy pages feels the rustle of dreams beneath their feet. The one reborn through dreams imagines themself as a star.

The painting, which crash-landed in the dim shade of a dense forest, gazes toward the radiant sunset beyond the branches with lonely eyes. Ten years have passed since Joo Hyeongjoon built his small chapel; when darkness begins to fill his sanctuary, a star starts to tell a story. In the hidden courtyard, a star sings softly in a loose rhythm, confessing its old wish—to become human.
