The Insa Art Space operated by the Arts Council Korea (Chairman: Byung-guk Jeong, Director: Geunhye Lim) presents the exhibition 《Battleground》 from October 18 to November 3, 2024. Held across the first and second floors of the space located in Wonseo-dong, the exhibition showcases Haevan Lee’s works that explore the coexistence of anxiety and tranquility within buffer zones of war—such as the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
Drawing on her upbringing near the DMZ, Lee reconstructs the landscapes of buffer zones as paradoxical sites where imagery of war collides with the serene beauty of nature.

Rather than directly representing war, her works combine abstract representations of boundaries with natural imagery, visually exploring the tension left by conflict and the contradictory calm of the buffer zone. Explosive flower forms and sunset-colored smoke in her paintings suggest the latent conflict and unease beneath nature’s apparent peace.

Prior to this exhibition, the artist presented the same-titled exhibition 《Battleground》 at Bradwolff Projects in Amsterdam in September 2024. For the Insa Art Space presentation, Lee adapted her works to the venue’s spatial characteristics—installing paintings and silk-based works on the first floor, and displaying ceramic pieces and various objects alongside paintings on the second floor. Visitors encounter a broad range of the artist’s formal experiments based on painting.

The accompanying publication Battleground compiles Haevan Lee’s works produced in the Netherlands between 2020 and 2024, along with her research, essays, and contributions from various artists and curators, providing a theoretical framework for the exhibition. The book will be distributed to visitors (limited to 100 copies) through a pre-registration link to be posted on Insa Art Space’s social media channels.
