From November 5 to November 28, 2020, Hakgojae Design | Project Space presents 《The Days were Strange and Peaceful》, a solo exhibition by Sungoo Im (b. 1990, Incheon). The artist is best known for her graphite drawing series, where she skillfully adjusts tonal intensity to create deeply atmospheric compositions.

Her imagery evokes myth, religion, and primitive belief systems, forming unfamiliar and enigmatic scenes that feel both sacred and mysterious. Im’s practice draws from her own subconscious—childhood memories and collected narratives—through which she constructs a world on paper. This exhibition marks her first presentation of six new video works.

The new works highlight a distinct shift in material and format, particularly with the artist’s first foray into moving images. The elements once confined within her drawings now traverse multiple scenes, expanding the scope of perception. The series stems from the idea that an individual’s consciousness is a fragment separated from a greater world, reflecting the artist’s intent to broaden the cosmology of her practice.

For the first time, color appears in her predominantly monochrome world—graphite, paint, and oil pastel intertwine to explore their material and visual resonance. The exhibition thus unfolds as a painterly experiment in the tactile and expressive possibilities of diverse mediums.
