From April 21 to May 12, Gallery BK Itaewon will hold 《Thirsty Enthusiasm》, a select exhibition of young Korean artists who will satiate the appetite of millennial and Gen Z collectors. Presenting young Korean artists active in the current art market, Gallery BK aims to use this occasion to introduce their persevering studio practices, passion and devotion for art, and art historical significance to the broader public.

Pop art, the abbreviation for “popular art,” is a painting concept that rose in New York in the 1960s along with the development of manufacturing and mass media. While reflecting the taste of popular culture, the genre also established the spirit of questioning what fine art is and remains to greatly influence and inspire young artists.

Deviations and alterations of pop art gave birth to countless movements that could not be identified individually, whereas, as the current generation of artists proclaim that “my practice is an art movement on its own,” their works have been satisfying the broad tastes of various collectors at home and abroad, transcending the definition of pop art and subculture.

Art is infinite and has no boundaries. Of the infinite possibilities, the young artists of the contemporary era are notable for their way of expression, choice of medium, and the way they alter their unique individuality from being vivid to being pale. They are straightforward and outright in expressing their thirst for art, meticulously reflecting their inner self in their highly original works or creating arenas for assessing social issues in a roundabout or critical manner.

Often, they reveal their determination and ceaseless reaffirmation of their beliefs by illustrating the image of the modern men who indulge in primal instincts and desire. The frank and unfiltered honesty of the ten artists presents visitors with unanticipated landscapes, interacting, motivating, and urging them to walk through stages of gradual enlightenment.

As empathy unites the artists and visitors into one and sails toward an unpredictable world, the conflicting emotions and attitudes toward a single subject also become one and incite the general public to continuously contemplate, conceptualize, and investigate what art is. Art no longer has distinct boundaries and the unexplored lands beyond the edge brim with infinite and boundless possibilities.

In this exhibition, Gallery BK will introduce ten young artists who have persevered in their unique, stylistic practices to satiate their infinite thirst for the meaning of art. Their works, flamboyantly decorating each exhibition hall from one basement floor to three ground floors, will undoubtedly draw contemplative viewpoints from visitors they themselves could not be aware of. Further, we hope this occasion to be a progress report on the contemporary Korean art market, a roundup of notable, rising artists, and the opportunity to experience their astonishing oeuvre in person.
